What is a glow-up?
The term “glow-up” essentially means makeover. However, instead of becoming only physically beautiful, you are also stepping into higher energy, developing healthier habits, and adopting a new lifestyle. As exciting as it might be to go to the mall and buy a new wardrobe, make-up kit, and handbag, we have to slow our rolls. You CANNOT skip the most important step which is preparation. Properly preparing will allow you to avoid spending excess money, feeling overwhelmed, not seeing results, and giving up. Follow these 4 prompts to stay organized and guide yourself to completing your glow-up journey.
Step 1: Determine Your Why
If you are only attempting to glow up to impress someone or meet societal standards, please re-evaluate. Beauty trends are constantly changing; you will never be able to meet all of them. Your glow-up should be for your OWN confidence, health, and self love.
Step 2: Evaluate Your Current Personality and Lifestyle
The goal of this step is to reflect on who you are currently. You want to elevate and highlight your best qualities. Ask yourself the following questions:
- What aspects of my personality do I love about myself?
- What aspects of myself have room for improvement, and why?
- What are aspects of my current life that I love, want to elevate, or change, and why?
Step 3: Envision Your Future Self and Lifestyle
Imagine who you want to be after you have finished your glow-up.
- What does my future self embody look like? How do they act?
- What hobbies does my future self enjoy?
- How does my future present herself to the world (wardrobe, makeup, etc)?
Step 4: Set Goals
From your previous reflection, begin to set a few realistic, obtainable goals for yourself. Then write the steps you will take to achieve these goals. Most of your goals should be specific, have a time limit, safe and achievable.
- For example: My goal is to gain/lose ___lbs in __months. The steps that I plan to achieve this by weight training/pilates/biking twice a week, eating 30g of protein a meal, and joining a fitness community.
Step 5: Develop a Budget
It is a popular misconception that glowing up will cost lots of money. This is true if you are keeping up with the Kardashians but the newest products that will “cure” acne, reduce fat, and solve all of your problems. Plan a small budget to buy long-lasting, essential staple products. Stay tuned for my next post on how to have a cost-efficient glow-up.
